The E-V-O-l-u-t-I-O-N Spectrum

After viewing The Evolution of Beauty the message of media and self-esteem comes to mind. when watching The Evolution of the Slob, the same message is conveyed except it is taken to an extreme. Both videos on the Evolution differ in the manner that one talks about perception, while the other speaks on the effect of negative influence.

In the Evolution Of Beauty, the model goes into makeup for a photoshoot, covering up any visible blemishes or marks. after the photo shoot, her image is photoshopped and cropped to the editors liking for promotion. the message behind the video is of how the media wants us to be portrayed. editors of magazines that deal in fashion and beauty want their readers to use the models as templates for what the ideal person should look like in society. this can cause readers to take extremes towards what they feel the are the standards for obtaining "the look". the message dove wanted to convey here is that models should be who they are in the media, because they are just like the people who read about them, and the readers shouldnt have to subject themselves to bodily harm just to be considered acceptable by media standards.

...Then there's its parody, The Evolution of The Slob. this video kind of reverses the direction of its predecessor, but another message nonetheless is apparent. while we want to be ourselves, many harm themselves with alcohol, tobacco, and unhealthy eating habits. as an end result, the model here falls victim to health problems in the future. some may not care about their looks. however those in the middle (the magazine readers) if not in that state, would frown upon that level.

Both videos show the double edged sword of perception of beauty and self esteem. while some of society wants to delve into the media's perception of beauty, they also greatly reject the look of the slobs of society. both extremes denounce the other and leave the man/woman in the middle conflicted between meeting standards and being who you are. The thing is, how do you know to accept yourself without endangering your health and well being?

Lifes a bitch, and then you have to write a term paper

i dont know what the purpose of term papers are, but they suck. Mainly speaking, i hate citations, and how you cant get away with saying at least two words without writing who made you think of it. anyway for the past couple weeks i had to write a term paper for one of my classes. Heres what writing the paper felt like in a four minute summary:

...While i liked what the paper was about, it felt like what i wrote was full of fact more than opinion, all because i had to back up all of my statements with a lot of facts, otherwise, a) i wouldnt meet the paper limits and B)There would be no point in writing something that the grader already knows and understands. on the other hand, i can understand that writing about certian facts allows other readers to get a general view of what the writer is talking about. In turn, the facts allow the reader to give their own opinion. so while it may the facts may not be necessary for the professor, who possibly knows what the writer is talking about, another reader may need to use it for their own respecitve purposes. but is there any way to make writing a paper easier?

The good news is I had nothing to worry about, i passed! the only thing that i have to work on for next time is my paraphrasing. At least the worst possible thing didnt happen, which is work on the paper till the last minute, otherwise it could have been as bad as the last 2 minutes of this clip (and if it takes a while to load, play it when you get some free time. Because, Come on... Its from the Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, and Who wouldnt want to watch that?)

See You Later.

I Dont Think I've Played That Before

So my topic for the essay is Fun, and what we consider it to be as we grow older. we may take it from innocent fun to what we see on "Jackass" nowadays. one of the things i remember doing for fun, was playing 3D (Ding, Dong, Ditch, just in case you dont know. the thrill of going from house to house either getting the attention of random people or a friend and to dodge them all together? sure it was crazy, but what else would you do when youre Young and out of school for the summer?

Now of course the rules of the game were to knock the door or ring the bell of someones house, and run like hell either to another house, or far enough to see their reaction. some people go as far as to repeat this at the same house (Just enough to get them annoyed). When it becomes an Urban Sport however, the rules seem a bit off, cause i dont remember moving away that close:

The eNd of the "N" Word?

You know when the whole Michael Richards Incident occured, i never expected it to go so far as to reinitiating the concept of its moral use. whether it be slang or dictionary, we now wonder, should the N word still be used? For that, I'm glad Kramer said what he said at the laugh factory. Why you ask? simple;Richards created a total uproar with everyone over a word that has been considered offensive (Nigger)while at the same time, commonly used by African-Americans as a term of endearment (Nigga).

Of course now, regardless of what it means, many want to get rid of the word altogether. Like in "A Word's Meaning" and the New York Times Article, i agree with the fact that the word has been transformed from something used for degradation, into something that is used to refer to people we know. Today you can hear "nigga" in conversations, when talking about another person, and in the lyrics of certian songs. Abolish The "N" Word, a campaign started by two brooklyn residents, urges the necessity to ban the word due to its original use towards blacks. what white families would do was take photos at the lynchings while the body was hanging, and send them out like ehchristmas postcards you now get of someones kids.

But just how far will it go? Unfortunatly it cant be abolished by law, as it goes against the first ameendment. And with the words commonality influenced on urban youth, what i feel is the majority who uses it, is it too late? when in high school, I'll admit ive heard it used by others, hell ive even used it in conversation once or twice, but in no means was it used by anyone to offend another. The question is with that mentality, can we stop the younger generations from using the word just by stopping those who have influenced its present usage, and is it possible to put a stop on the "N" word, considering the thoughts and beliefs of everyone?

I want to leave you with a thought question with the below video. This news report concerns a High School Teacher in Kentucky that used the term "nigga" towards one of his students. when you see the report, you will see, Yeah, he wasnt right in saying it (and i dont mean racewise), but he does bring up a good Question himself, "Why is this word being so frequently used?" **(Note: While this is a news report, because of the teachers intent and definition of the "N" word, the report was not censored, and may offend viewers. But since we are talking about this in class, i think it's suitable) Leave your comments, Please!!

Last Laugh: On a Ligher Note, heres more things you woudnt do in in New York!

Heres something that should get you out of that rut (if you watched the previous video), If you remember my first post on this series i put up a vid of a guy named Neg who specializes in urban sports. Well, ive found out that he had plenty more. So since it is the winter season, i decided to post another one called "Make them Move", because, the only way to keep warm in this weather is to keep moving!

Next week I'll Put another Urban Sport Up That's related to the next essay assignment. I'm not going to say what my topic is, but if you have been watching them you might get it.

Words Cannot Explain...(The Response)

I never thought i would witness something like that. i mean peer pressure can be a bitch, but what the hell does a 17 year old have the right to give weed to a 2 & 5 year old child?! what makes this more disturbing is not only the fact that the guy is their Uncle, not just the fact that this was caught on tape, but the fact that the childrens mother was sleeping the whole time! What The F*@$ were they going to do, show her the video on her birthday? And with her response, Dont get me started. She said they made an honest mistake and they shouldnt do hardcore time. first of all, the original reason police were going to arrest him was for suspicion of burglary, so he was doing time either way! Secondly, These are your children. If you are concerned about the welfare and safety of your children, You should be extremly upset about what he and his friend did. Not to sound offensive but I think that Placing the two in foster care was the right thing to do. if you're going to act careless about your children, then sorry, but you dont deserve them.
